I have written a technical report called "Jül-Bericht; 3786" with the 
title,

Software tools to organize and visualize scientific data sets
using the Interactive Datavisualisation Language (IDL),
implemented by the  Institute for Chemistry and Dynamic of the Geosphere
(ICG), Research Center J\"ulich

Abstract:
 
This booklet describes the principle properties and possibilities of the
ICG IDL-library.
The base for data exchange between modules and files is the
ICG-DATA-STRUCTURE.
  
The setup and definition of this data structure is explained in detail.
The data structure includes definitions which are useful for a
relational database of scientific data.
For visualization purposes of the data a HTML and a PLOT environment is
described.
The PLOT environment standardizes high quality graphics of scientific
data.
Possible output devices for the plots are screen, postscript and
GIF-Animation.
 
The HTML environment is used as an easy-to-use tool to publish
scientific data and graphics in the world wide web.
  
The most text is written in german. But there are lots of language 
independent idl Syntax examples and images.
