-- Live in Boulder, Colorado and Take a Trip to Saturn ---
The Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations (CICLOPS) in
Boulder,
Colorado is staffing up in preparation for the journey to Saturn! We
are
seeking a mature, highly-motivated and self-directed individual to fill
the position of Software Engineer. This is a great opportunity to get
involved in the building of a small, team-oriented and fun working
environment in beautiful downtown Boulder.
The Cassini spacecraft, built and operated by the JPL in Pasadena,
California,
was launched in October 1997, and is now on its way to Saturn. Arrival
is
summer 2004; nominal mission lifetime is 4 years. The Cassini Imaging
Science
experiment (ISS) is the main imaging device on Cassini and is one of 12
scientific instruments designed to make observations of the bodies and
phenomena within the Saturn system. It is expected to return 500,000
images of
the Saturn system over the course of 4 years. The Imaging Science team
is a
collection of 14 scientists spread throughout the US and Europe. CICLOPS
is
the hub of Imaging Team operations and will coordinate and oversee the
development of imaging observation requests from remote team member
sites
to JPL. The release of data products to the public, the maintenance and
distribution of imaging data to the science team, and well as image
analysis
and scientific publication are activities that will be conducted by
CICLOPS.
(See http://ciclops.lpl.arizona.edu/ for more information.)
CICLOPS has need for an individual with expert skills in IDL,
applications
programming experience in Fortran and C++, and general image and data
processing/analysis. The successful applicant will be involved in the
development of image sequence planning and analytical tools based on IDL
that
are critical to the success of the Imaging Science experiment.
Depending on
qualifications, he/she may also be involved in the processing of
imaging data
for both release to the public and for scientific analysis.
The successful applicant needs to show a strong record of demonstrated
performance in the development of large software projects based on IDL
code,
including GUIs and widgets. Experience with UNIX-type operating systems
is
a must; familiarity with multiple operating system environments is
desireable.
A strong background in astronomy, planetary science and/or remote
sensing is
highly preferred. Demonstrated expertise in image processing is a plus.
Reliability in meeting deadines and good organizational skills are a
must.
Knowledge/Education: A bachelors degree in mathematics/science, and
3+ years working experience, are required.
Starting salary will likely be in the vicinity of $55K - $60K, depending
on qualifications and experience.
CICLOPS currently resides at the University of Arizona in Tucson but
will be
moving to downtown Boulder at the end of May, 2001.
